Soybeans are a cheap, crappy, hard to digest, food source with many harmful side effects. Once again you have been lied to and I will not tone down the truth so corporations can market waste products as health food. The Chinese did not eat unfermented soybeans because of the large quantities of natural toxins or "antinutrients" that can cause serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and conditions of the pancreas including cancer. When I first started weight training I picked up a tub of vanilla flavored soy protein powder and started chugging down some chalky, ill tasting shakes with glee. I thought I was doing myself a big favor but little did I know I was actually reversing any chance of muscular gains.
Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat risk severe mineral deficiencies. The results of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known; those of zinc are less so.1 I met someone recently who was vegetarian and ate lots of tofu because she "loves animals". Before we go any further the farmer in me has to come out and talk about the farming of soy beans. You see it is a relatively easy crop to grow. Check any product in the grocery store and you will see soy and soy derivatives in almost every product on the shelf. In fact there are numerous lobbyists whose simple professional existence is to continue to promote the proliferation of Soy.
They soon started to notice changes. Some of their birds developed fully-coloured plumage within just a few months instead of the normal one-and-a-half to two years. The Jameses were concerned but the feed manufacturers said it was a good thing. Substances known as genistein and daidzein (also referred to as "isoflavones") in soy products, can mimic the effects of estrogen. In one study, pregnant Rhesus monkeys who were fed genistein developed up to double the normal levels of estrogen in their blood.
This combines with minerals in our diet, and hinders their absorption. Phytic acid is also found in raw grains such as muesli, and in unleavened wholemeal bread such as chappatis. It causes dwarfism in parts of the world such as Iran where the soil is very poor in zinc. Researchers do not deny that during the study a lower level of sperm was recorded in men who regularly consume soy products, but others believe that other factors may be involved such as obesity or simply overweight. A study, conducted by Jorge Chavarri from Harvard School of Public Health, is available in the Human Reproduction journal. Researchers argue that the clinical significance of his research remains to be determined, but Chavarri said that the isoflavones in soybeans - hormones that have similar effects to estrogen - could have an impact on the number of sperm.
The results of this study were rather striking, and were highly statistically significant when comparing the incidence of breast cancer among women with the highest levels of soy intake versus the women with the least soy intake. While this particular study did not measure isoflavone levels in the blood, as was done in the prostate cancer study that I reviewed last week, its results, nonetheless, mirror the findings of other similar epidemiological studies.
