Hair Perming Tips

Perm works by breaking down inner structures in your hair and reforming them around a curler to give a new shape. Hair should be washed prior to perming as this causes the scales on the cuticles to rise gently, allowing the perming lotion to enter the hair shaft more quickly.

The perm treatment has gone far back in history. Women of Ancient Egypt used to put on a concoction of soil and water to their hair. Afterwards, they set their hair using primitive curlers made out of wood and bask under the sun to supply heat to their hair.

One of the most common problems occurs when perms are rather weak or, in other words, they are not visibly curly enough. This is mainly caused by a weak perm lotion. So try to use a stronger one according to your type of hair. Sometimes perm lotion is not left on long enough. There are even the cases when incorrect placing or angling of perm rods causes the further problem.

Long or short, soft or thick curls are and have been trendy for many years. But for someone with straight hair this trend may be out of reach. So, in order to come to the rescue of those that desperately wish to have wavy hair specialists have created the hair perms. A perm is a chemical process that radically changes the normal shape of the hair follicle.

Getting your hair permed involves use of chemicals to break and reform the disulfide bonds of the hair. The hair is washed and wrapped on a perm rod and waving lotion is applied with a base. The hair swells and softens and stretches. The hair then molds around the shape of the perm rod. After a specified period of time, the hair is rinsed and a neutraliser is applied.

There are different kinds of perm which can be permanent as well as temporary. Make a choice according to your liking. It gives bounce to your hair, adds a new look to your body which can be very satisfying. It helps in making it very soft and adds fullness to the same. Many people have different reasons for perming their hair whether the reasons are good or bad.

During perming, chemicals are used to break and reform the disulfide bonds of the hair. Thereafter, the hair is washed and wrapped on a perm rod and waving lotion is applied with a base. As the lotion is alkaline (pH about 9), the scales of the cuticle open slightly, allowing the lotion to flow under the cuticle and into the cortex.

Perms are incredibly popular, as this is a great way to add bounce, curls and body to your hair. With perms, it is possible to make straight hair curly or wavy, increase the fullness of soft and fine hair and just make it easier to manage your hair.

Who should get a perm? Perms usually work best on hair that has not been colored or hair in which chemicals have not been heavily applied. If you're not sure whether your hair is best for perm, you might just simply ask your stylist.
