What Are The Astigmatism Symptoms

Astigmatism- what is it? Astigmatism is actually the most common form of vision problem, and most people have it to a certain degree. How would you know if you are suffering from this particular kind of eye condition? It can be that you would not be able to notice symptoms at all, or perhaps minimally, such as slight blurred vision.

Astigmatism is a medical term for a blurred vision that is caused by the irregular curve of the cornea. In this condition light rays will enter the eye not in the right focus on the retina, creating a blurred image. In simple words, astigmatism is an image distortion that is caused by improper shape of the cornea.

Certain types of astigmatism contact lens have proven to be ineffective. Ineffective lens will not be able to address astigmatism and in some cases, will worsen the condition. A recommended lens for astigmatism is toric contact lens. These lenses are made of the same material as spherical contacts and able to retain the shape of the cornea better.

Astigmatism, unlike some eye conditions, is one that people are normally born with. Those who suffer from astigmatism are likely to have corneas that are shaped like a rugby ball rather than a football. This means that the corneas tend to have two different curves, a flatter and a steeper one. As a result, light focuses in more than one point of the eye, which causes blurred vision.

If you are found to have astigmatism, there are a few options that you can take advantage of to improve your sight and lessen the effect of astigmatism. One of the easiest methods is, of course, getting properly-fitted contact lenses or eyeglasses to correct the issue. This can be done relatively easily and is a pretty convenient and cost effective option. See your eye doctor to get this process started.

Procuring a contact for astigmatism used to mean that only rigid lenses or a hard contact lens for astigmatism could be used but now there is a soft contact for astigmatism that can be used. This contact for astigmatism is called a toric lens.

This contact for astigmatism contains a special correction which can also include a prescription for short sightedness and farsightedness if needed.

Most of the astigmatism patients are born with that, which may get worse over time. Eye injuries, improper eye surgeries and keratoconus can also damage the corneal shape. The corneal shape of astigmatism patients is not perfectly spherical. Instead, it likes an oblong football, which causes light rays to focus on two points in the eye back. For regular astigmatism, its two meridians are located 90 degrees apart, so that it is easy to correct.

Astigmatism can be corrected relatively easy with contact lenses or eye glasses, unless it is extreme. Toric contact lenses were especially designed for people with astigmatism. This type of lens has two functions. The first is to correct the spherical refractive error, and the second is to reconfigure light rays that are unevenly refracted due to the astigmatism.
